英语中表示基础的词

Basis, base, foundation和ground表示某一事物作为一个基础，另一事物可以建筑或建立其上，或表示一种意见或一个决定的依据或理由，例如：
1．Basis 常指一种无形的抽象的基础或依据，例如：
the basis of morality 道德基础；arguments that have a firm basis有事实为根据的论点
The rumor has no basis．这个谣传无根据。
Electronics is the basis of a11 telecommunications systems.
电子学是所有无线电通讯系统的基础。
There is yet no theoretical basis for his invention at the moment.
他的发明目前尚无理论依据。
2．Base主要用于任何一种物体的基础或底部。例如：
the base of a building一幢建筑物的基础；the base of a statue一座雕／铸／塑象的基座；the base of a crane起重机底脚；the base of a mountain山脚。
The machine will have to rest on a firm base．那台机器必须安放在一个坚实的底座上。
The lamp stands on a circular base． 这个灯的灯座是圆形的。
Base还可以表示一个地点，在这个地方打好“基础”，然后向外发展(a place from where sth．is started and developed)，汉语译作“根据地”、“基地”，这是另外三个单词所不能替代的。例如：
the revolutionary base革命基地，革命根据地；a training base训练基地；a supply base供应基地；a missile base导弹基地
base有时也用于抽象的隐喻，下面这些短语是较为常见的：
the base of a theory理论基础；the base of one’s argument某人争论的依据；the economic base经济基础
从这一意义上说，basis和base是同义词。上面短语中的base可以用basis替换。但是base的含义比较窄，它往往表示一种意见或一个观点的主要依据，一门学科的基本原理，因此有的词典把base译成了“基本内容”，如：
Axioms are the base of geometry．公理是几何学的基本内容。
The base of his argument is that our price is too high．他的争辩的主要方面是说我们的要价太高。
Basis的含义则较广，它可表示某种意见、观点、理论的各个方面的依据，既有作为基础的基本原理，还包括其中心的或基本的部分。例如；
the basis of the decision 这一决定的依据(包括决定的基础及主要依据)
On what basis do you propose to pay me? 你凭什么建议把钱给我呢?(basis加强了本句疑问的力量)
需要提醒的是在习语on the basis of…(在……基础上)中，basis不能为其他词所替代。另外base和basis的复数形式均为bases，前者读作[ˈbeisiz]，后者读作[ˈbeisi:z]
3．foundation指建筑物的坚固的下层基础。与base比较，大体上说foundation是在地下的，base是地上的；foundation指大建筑物的基础，base指单柱的基础。例如：the foundation of St．Paulˈs (圣保罗大教堂的基础)。The base of a column(柱脚)。又如：
A skyscraper must be laid on a firm foundation．一幢摩天大楼必须建造在坚固的基础之上。
The explosion shook the building to its foundation，爆炸声使这一建筑连同它的基础都晃动了。
All dams need sound foundations． 所有土坝都需要坚实的基础。
foundation也可用于抽象意思，这时它与basis同义，例如：
This theory has no foundation． 这个理论无事实依据。
The rumor has no foundation． 这个谣传无根据。。
4．ground常表示一项决定、一个论点或一种关系的基础，一般不作某一具体的物体的基础，经常译作“理由”、“根据”。ground作此解时常用复数，但谓语用单数形式。例如：
The grounds for his decision was never stated． 他的决定的依据从未说明过。
I have much ground (或many grounds) for believing the information.我有充分根据相信这个消息。
