What is the matter与What’s the trouble

SBI（Senior Book One），P174上有这么一句：The owner of the shop came up to see what was the matter.(店老板走了过来，看看是怎么回事。)（下文称句1）而在P264上有这么一句： He bent down to ask her what the trouble was. (他弯下腰问他是怎么回事。)（下文称句2）。
大家都知道“What’s the matter和What’s the trouble?都可以表示“怎么啦？”“出什么事啦？”为什么句1的宾语从句中没有调整语序，依然是what was the matter. 而句2宾语从句中调整了语序，变成了what the matter was呢？
What is the matter?中，当the matter 作“困难”“麻烦”“失常的事”等解时，the matter习惯被用作形容词一般．例如：There is something the matter with him. (他有些失常)。There is nothing the matter with the machine.（这机器没有毛病。）以上两例中的the matter相当于形容词wrong。The matter既然有形容词性质，所以what is the matter?中的what通常看作是主语，句1中的宾语从句的词序依然是what was the matter. 如果变成what the matter was. the matter作了主语．那意思是（1)物质是什么或(2)那件事是什么。
What is the trouble? 一般都把the trouble看作主语，因此句2)宾语从句的词序是what the trouble was而不是what was the trouble。但如果在the trouble后面再跟with短语，即使是宾语从句，be也可在the trouble之前，这是防止句子不平衡的需要．而不是说what是主语。例如： He asked me what was the trouble with the machine.
