both /bəuθ/ I. adj. 两者(人，物) 都 (用于定冠词、指示代词、所有格名词/代词及其它形容词前面)：I want both books/ both the books/ both these books.这两本书我都想要。Both his younger brothers are in the army.他的两个弟弟均在服兵役。‖II.pron.两者；两者都：Both are good.两个都好。Both of them (the students) are good. 他们两个(这两个学生)都好。We both want to go.我们俩都想去。He likes John and Mary both. 他喜欢约翰和玛丽二人。Why not use both?怎么不两个都用呢? ［注］ 1.both与名词连用时①名词前如有定冠词、物主代词、指示代词, “of”可有可无： Both (of) the cars broke down soon after the start. 两辆车开动后不久都出了故障。I got both (of) these vases in Spain. 我这两个花瓶都是在西班牙买的。 ②名词前若没有定冠词、物主代词、指示代词,则不得用“of”： Both children have been to Greece.两个孩子都去过希腊。(不用Both of children)。 2. both与代词连用或作代词时 ① 在人称代词前必须有of: Both of us were born on July 2nd. 我们俩都是7月2日出生。(不能讲“both we”或 “both us”。) The letter is addressed to us both /to both of us. 信是寄给我们俩的。②both前面不得有冠词，如不可以说： The both children… 3. both与动词连用时 ①放在动词be后面：You are both wrong. 你们俩都错了。The children were both too young. 这两个孩子都太小了。②在其它动词前面：We both like football.我们俩都喜欢足球。The men both looked French. 那两人看起来都是法国人。③若谓语部分有几个动词，both应放在第一个助动词后。My parents have both been invited.我父母均受到了邀请。They must both have been killed. 他们俩肯定都被害了。‖III.conj. (与and连用) both … and…不但…而且…(并列连词，连接两个完全相等的句子成分，若连接主语，其谓语动词应用复数形式)：She both plays the piano and sings. 她既能弹钢琴又能唱歌。She plays both the piano and the guitar. 她既能弹钢琴又能弹吉他。Both he and his father are doctors. 他和他父亲都是医生。
