borrow /ˈbɔrəu/ vt.& vi. 借来，借入：He neither borrows nor lends.他不借别人的东西也不把东西借给别人。May I borrow your pen?我可借用一下你的钢笔吗? He fell into the river and had to go home in borrowed clothes.他跌入河中，所以不得不穿着借来的衣服回家。 

［辨析］borrow与lend 都是“借”的意思，borrow表示借进，borrow sth. from sb.表示“从某人(处)借某物”：I borrowed a pound from my brother. 我从我弟弟那儿借了一英镑。而lend表示借出，“把东西借给某人”, 可以说lend sth. to sb.也可以说lend sb. sth.: I lent my car to my girl-friend. 我把车借给我女朋友了。Lend me your dictionary for a minute, will you? 把你的词典借我用一会，好吗?由于以上的差别，lend可在被动语态中以人做主语，而borrow则不行。 We’ve been lent a cottage in the Alps for the summer. 别人借给我们一处阿尔卑斯山中的乡间住宅供我们度暑期。
